Ragan Meadow is a contemporary artist based in South Carolina whose expressionist practice is rooted in memory, emotion, and atmosphere. Painting is a meditative process for Ragan — one of the few spaces where her mind becomes quiet. Through rich color, gestural mark-making, and unconventional subject matter, she uses painting as a way to preserve the feelings, sounds, and energy of specific moments in time.
Her work is heavily influenced by music and visual culture, particularly the bold aesthetics of 1970s rock and roll posters. An avid record collector, Ragan often paints while listening to music, allowing rhythm and sound to guide her intuitive process. These influences emerge through vibrant palettes, dreamlike compositions, and emotionally charged imagery that resists literal interpretation.
Light plays a central role in Ragan’s work. She is drawn to intense contrasts of light and shadow. Repeating patterns found in nature, along with experiences of travel and observation, further inform her paintings, creating work that feels alive.
Creating is an essential part of Ragan’s daily life, whether she is sketching scenes around her, drawing friends, or working on large-scale expressionist oil paintings. She hopes her work invites viewers into a sense of curiosity, wonder, and quiet suspension — a dreamlike state that encourages reflection and emotional connection.
Meadow holds a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the College of Charleston. The landscapes, light, and rhythms of the South Carolina Lowcountry have played a significant role in shaping her artistic growth and continue to influence her work today.
